Launching the new BIM Viewer App

Omega 365 Solutions’ Building Information Modeling (BIM) department recently launched their new BIM Viewer App, enabling clients to efficiently perform offline work on construction sites.

System developer Gaute Haugen is showing off the new BIM Viewer App.

BIM is a digital representation of a building or an asset and makes it possible to navigate within the 3D model of a project, read more here. With the new BIM Viewer App users can download the BIM model of a project, register information while they are offline, and upload changes when they have internet connection again.

System developer and BIM department manager, Per Olav Stenberg, is happy to now have a robust solution in place for Omega 365 clients.

“The internet connection on a construction site is not always sufficient for performing work efficiently. Working offline on the construction site and then connecting and synchronizing your work with Omega 365 when you are online again avoids double work and saves a lot of time,” says system developer and BIM Department Manager, Per Olav Stenberg.

Information such as activities, punch items, documentation, workflows, images, and more that are registered in the BIM module will automatically be updated in Omega 365 when connected again. Stenberg explains that a wide range of clients have started to use the BIM Viewer App and are experiencing a better way to ensure data is registered and uploaded.

“This has been a need for several of our clients and we are happy to have a solution in place now and to continue improving it.”

The app is available via iOS and Android devices.

More robust solution

The BIM module has been under development for over five years for Omega 365’s project management systems. With the launch of the Omega 365 platform, which is project execution software designed to assist projects, assets and organizations of all sizes, the BIM department decided to develop the module from scratch.

“Building on previous experience, the current BIM solution is a more robust and solid module that scales information more efficiently. We have strengthened the integration between workflows, activities, and documents, and made the module more user friendly. The BIM module ties seamlessly to the rest of Omega 365 and makes it possible to create workflows linked directly to objects in the model,” Stenberg says and adds that hazards and risk cases are also easier to register and update.

The decision to build the module from scratch also enabled the team to rethink the technological decisions on which the software is based, something that in turn made the offline functionality possible.

“We knew that we wanted to enable future offline functionality when we started building the module from scratch in 2021. It’s great to see that our decisions back then set us in a position to develop this functionality now,” says Stenberg.

The BIM module has been adopted by clients such as Statsbygg (the Norwegian government’s key advisor in construction and property affairs), Sykehusbygg, Veidekke, Avinor, and Oslo Municipality.

Interdisciplinary development

Stenberg and his team in the BIM Department, which was launched in 2020 , have worked with several departments in Omega 365 to develop and launch the app.

“The BIM department has been responsible for improving and developing the BIM viewer, and the app team has developed the solution. We are lucky to have so many skilled colleagues in Omega 365,” suggests Stenberg and adds that they are always on the lookout for new additions to the team.

“We welcome those who would like to join us in developing and exploring how far we can take our BIM module.”
