Pims Projects: Skanska utilizes HMSREG to promote responsible working conditions

Skanska is one of the world’s leading construction and project development companies. In 2018, Skanska, Veidekke, and AF Gruppen started utilizing HMSREG to promote responsible working conditions.

  • Skanska was established in Skåne, Sweden in 1887.
  • Today, Skanska is one of the world’s leading companies within construction and project development.
  • The company has approximately 38 000 employees worldwide and 3 700 employees in Norway.
  • Skanska’s vision, “we build for a better society”, infiltrates everything the company does, especially community responsibility, ethics, and HSE.
  • As a tool in their push against work-related crime Skanska, along with Veidekke and AF Group chose to utilize HMSREG, which is developed by Omega, in 2018.

Kristian Brende is the Executive Vice President for the Specialists division in Skanska Norway. He is also responsible for leading and coordinating Skanska’s efforts to promote responsible working conditions and combat work-related crime in the construction industry.

“We are part of the industry that, the Government has pointed out, is at the highest risk of work-related crime. There are cases where individuals from worker unions have had their lives threatened; there are employees that do not receive the pay they are entitled to; and there are companies that are cheating on their taxes,” says Brende.

According to Skanska, the industry must work together to solve the challenges of work-related crime. Companies must prevent crime-related businesses and criminals from accessing projects; builders must hire companies with the correct skills and competence; the government must provide more access to relevant information, ensure interaction between public agencies and registers, and continuously develop and improve HSE-cards.

As part of this work Skanska has chosen four focus areas that they have been working on over the past few years: extended tax certificates, the use of contract assistance, their contract register, and HMSREG.

Over two years ago, Skanska, along with Veidekke and AF Group, joined forces and signed a contract with Omega because they believed that it was most expedient to be a larger group using the same system. According to Brende, Omega was the system supplier that would provide most added value, and that had advanced the most in terms of the development of their system.

“HMSREG provides a unique control over who is on-site in our projects at all times. We have never had another system that has given us such a simple and positive control over which companies and employees are present on our construction sites.”

“The cooperation and dialogue that we have had with Omega over the past years has helped us to develop and made us even better at making the right decisions,” says Brende.
