Inside Omega

Thank you letter from BBRF

Omega’s Christmas gift of $115,000 for 2020 and 2021 goes to the funding of research to help understand, prevent, and alleviate the suffering caused by mental illness. Read the letter of thanks we received from the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation here.

Dear Omega,

I would like to extend a personal thank you for the generous gift of $115,000 (2020 and 2021) from Omega towards general research to the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF). This gift to the Foundation means a great deal to the progress of our research funding, and ultimately to those whose lives we touch.

Since 1987, BBRF has awarded more than $418 million to fund more than 6,000 grants to researchers in 36 countries. This has led to more than $4 billion in additional funding for these scientists working to dramatically improve the lives of those living with mental illness and ultimately enabling people to live full, happy, and productive lives.

Through contributions like yours, BBRF grantees have made important discoveries. Recently, two new rapid-acting medications for treatment-resistant depression and postpartum depression were approved by the FDA. Another recent advancement made by BBRF-supported researchers is evidence suggesting that by giving dietary supplements of the nutrient choline to women during pregnancy, the risk of their newborns later developing schizophrenia and psychosis may be significantly reduced. The American Medical Association has recently recommended that this strategy might join folic acid dietary supplementation as a standard precautionary preventive measure in expectant mothers. In addition, a recent study recommends that taking extra choline may help pregnant women decrease the negative effect that viral respiratory infections, including COVID-19, can have on brain function and subsequent mental health in their newborns.

Once again, thank you. Omega's generosity will help have an impact on alleviating the suffering of those living with mental illness.

Yours sincerely,

Brain & Behavior Research Foundation
